Vampire Roots And History
Most of Vampire history is shrouded in centuries of lost knowledge, misinformation and pure mystery. Not much is truly known about our past; there are many, many legends, theories and documented history but most of which is speculative.
One of the largest and most fiercely debated topics of our history is our origins… Did we come from one single person? Have humans always been like this? Is it a scientific anomaly, some sort of pact with demons or another higher power? All of these are theories posted by many of our kind; yet none of them have been proven to be the truth. We will go through all the told legends and you yourself can decide what you think is the truth of our kind.
One famous legend of the origins of our kind is of the story of the Bible's Cain. Can is one of Adam and Eve's sons and Abel's older brother. The Bible states that after killing Abel out of jealous rage, God curses Cain for eternity for the spilling of his brother’s blood; the first human blood ever spilled mind you. Genesis 4:10-12 says:
The lord said, “What have you done? Listen! Your brother’s blood cries out to me from the ground. Now you are under a curse, and driven from the ground, which opened its mouth to receive your brother’s blood from your hand. When you work the ground, it will no longer yield its crops to you. You will be a restless wanderer on this earth.”
Vampire historians have pointed out peculiar details surrounding his curse. That is, no one being able to kill him, he was made immortal. Unable to grow crops for food he resorted to “other” means of nutrition. Here is where some debate lies; some say he became a Vampire through the curse and fed on blood; others say that he became one from a result of him feeding and surviving off people’s energy - due to not being able to make food himself. Either way the legend states he became the first Vampire spawning a new race of people - able to take life force from blood and drain others of their vital energy.
Another origin myth stems from the belief that Vampires are descended from the Egyptian God Set. Legend goes that the other gods feared him immensely and kept him in the Underworld - caged for all eternity.
It is said that, as the Egyptian nation as we know it was forming, he found a way to reach the Mortal Realm for just one night. On this night hundreds of people had gone missing… only found to be drained of blood the following day. Not much is known about what happened that night. It is said that Horus began his daily eternal battle with Set from that night on to keep him in the Underworld - unable to feed and prey on the innocent.
Those are just but a few of many origin theories. Most modern Vampires have little care for the origins of our kind though. Regardless of who was the first we are here now, we are hungry now and always will be until our death.
